Commissioned Instruments

Dylan Race makes a limited quantity of fine violins and violas every year. The violins are based on a lovely Fiorini violin that used to be around the shop, while the violas are based on a Grancino viola. These instruments are made with the highest quality Austrian maple for the backs, ribs and scroll and Engelmann spruce from Colorado for the tops. I am able to work one-on-one with the musician throughout the process, from selecting the piece of wood to the final coat of varnish, and continuing with tonal tweaks throughout the instrument’s life. The tonal characteristics of Dylan’s instruments tends toward dark and sweet, but with a sticky immediacy and powerful sound. I most often make full size instruments for professionals, but also very much enjoy making fractional sizes for exceptional young players. Please call for more details!
